Chandos Symphony Orchestra: Titan

17th March 2019 7:30 pm

Michael Lloyd Conductor
Aydin Onac Piano

Berlioz Carnival Romain Overture
Rachmaninov Piano Concerto no 2
Mahler Symphony No 1 “Titan”

Opening with Berlioz’s effervescent Roman Carnival Overture, the first concert of the 40th Anniversary season sees the long-awaited return an old friend of the orchestra, Aydin Onac, to play arguably Rachmaninov’s most famous work. Chandos has been fortunate to work with Aydin on a number of occasions during its four decades, and the orchestra is delighted that he can be part of this celebratory year. The combination of this extraordinarily talented pianist and quite possibly the best-loved piano concerto ever written makes this a performance not to be missed.

Premiered in 1889, Mahler’s Symphony no 1, then a five-movement work rather than the four it eventually became, had a very mixed reception, but it has since become a favourite of orchestras and audiences alike. Moving from naturalistic sounds of the countryside, through a rustic dance and then a funeral march, it concludes with an exuberant and up-lifting ending.
