An adventurous retelling of the extraordinary true story of June and Jennifer Gibbons, twins from the only Black family in Haverfordwest in Wales in the 1970s and ’80s, who grew up communicating only with each other.
As children, June and Jennifer live an isolated existence. Subject to bullying and racist abuse, they retreat into a fantasy world of artistic inspiration and adolescent desire. A spree of vandalism sees them committed, as young women, to a notorious institution where they can choose to separate and survive, or face mutual destruction. Their singular story could have been given relatively simple treatment, but Smoczyńska’s eerie, wildly inventive film uses formal flourishes to channel the inner lives of two talented and disturbed young women pushed to extremes.
