Aquarela (12A)

2nd March 2020 1:15 pm

Water is the main protagonist, seen in all its great and terrible beauty in Aquarela.

Mountains of ice move and break apart as if they had a life of their own as director Victor Kossakovsky’s film travels the world, from the precarious frozen waters of Russia’s Lake Baikal, Miami in the throes of Hurricane Irma, to Venezuela’s mighty Angel Falls, in order to paint a portrait of this fluid life force in all its glorious forms. It’s a commentary on climate change that eschews words, relying on the considerable power of moving images to immerse and sway.

Director: Victor Kossakovsky
UK/Germany/Denmark/US, 2019, 1 hour 29 minutes

“In this vision, water feels like a very old god: a pagan one that is volatile, wrathful, impassive to the perils of man and yet majestic and serene.” Ben Nicholson, Sight & Sound
